The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has cautioned supporters of its presidential aspirants—particularly those backing Mr. Peter Obi—to desist from divisive rhetoric, warning that such actions only serve the interests of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The party expressed concern that internal divisions among supporters could undermine its chances in the forthcoming general elections.
Speaking during an online meeting on the state of the nation and the polity on Saturday in Abuja, the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, stressed the need for unity among party leaders and supporters alike.
Abdullahi disclosed that the party has been engaging key national figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, with a shared focus on strengthening unity, sharpening focus, and building a collective commitment capable of delivering electoral victory.
According to him, ADC leaders are fully aware of the task ahead and are united in their determination to win the elections.
On the timing of the proposed 2027 general elections, Abdullahi described the prospect of holding elections this year as a “double-edged sword” for the party, noting that it could limit the time needed to resolve internal disagreements and adequately prepare.
He said the party would prefer elections to be held next year, as this would allow it to capitalize on growing public dissatisfaction with the APC-led administration.
“Whether the elections take place this year or next year, it will be double work for us, and in some ways, work against us,” Abdullahi said.
“As an opposition party, we need time to heal wounds after our primaries. We cannot afford to go through bruising primaries and immediately plunge into elections without proper reconciliation.”
He added, however, that while early elections could benefit the ADC due to widespread dissatisfaction with the current administration, the party does not control the election timetable.
Abdullahi also warned supporters who promote an “all-or-nothing” narrative around any aspirant to desist, insisting such conduct weakens the party.
“Those supporting divisiveness by backing one aspirant against all others should stop what they are doing because they are clearly working to the advantage of the APC and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he said.
“Saying it is either this candidate or nothing is not helpful. Getting the ticket alone means nothing; what is important is winning the election.”
He emphasized that all ADC presidential aspirants are eminently qualified and cautioned against the vilification of individuals or regions, describing such actions as counterproductive.
“We believe that all our aspirants are qualified. Vilifying anyone or any region will only make our task more difficult,” Abdullahi stated.
He added that the party would soon commence a renewed effort to strengthen internal cohesion and encourage its leaders to consistently preach unity.
Specifically addressing supporters of Peter Obi, Abdullahi noted that extreme rhetoric in his name was not helping his candidacy.
“Those shouting ‘Peter Obi or nothing’ are not helping him. They are preaching division and closing the door for people from other parts of the country to support him,” he said.
“Everyone needs to be on board if we are to win this election.”
