National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has described the recent defection of some state governors to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a fluke, insisting that Nigerians will reject them at the polls.
Aregbesola spoke at the public presentation of “The Loyalist”, a book authored by the National Publicity Secretary of the ADC, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi.
According to him, the governors’ defection represents a betrayal of the trust reposed in them by the people.
He urged Nigerians to remain steadfast with the ADC, stressing that the outcome of the 2023 general elections proved that governors do not win elections on their own, but that the people ultimately decide.
Aregbesola also cautioned Nigerians to remain vigilant, alleging that the APC no longer plans to win elections through popular votes but through manipulation.
“The APC can no longer win the votes of Nigerians. If they believe they can, let them commit themselves to a free and fair election and allow Nigerians to decide,” he said.
Chairman of the occasion and National Chairman of the ADC, Senator David Mark, commended the author for documenting and chronicling Nigeria’s political history through the book.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, in his remarks, underscored the importance of loyalty to a cause, noting that loyalty should be reciprocal and mutually beneficial.
He further called for inclusive opportunities for all Nigerians.
Speakers at the event described the ADC as a convergence of democrats across political divides determined to rescue Nigeria, accusing the APC of “bastardising” the nation’s political life and calling for unity to save the country through a new political movement.
Dignitaries at the event included Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, Waziri Tambuwal, Emeka Ihedioha, Liyel Imoke, Great Ogboru, Kayode Fayemi, Suleiman Adokwe, Oserhiemen Osunbor, John Oyegun, Abdulfatai Ahmed, among others.
