The Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), led by its Chairman, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, has paid a condolence visit to the family of Pa Joe Onyibe, a respected veteran journalist and founder of Ika Voice Newspaper, who passed away on Wednesday, August 30, 2025, in his hometown of Abavo, Ika South Local Government Area of the state
Pa Onyibe, who was admired across Delta State and beyond for his wisdom, humility, and unwavering commitment to journalism, died peacefully at the age of 90 after a brief illness. Until his final days, he remained an active voice in media and public affairs.
During the emotional visit, Comr. Oyowe described the late Onyibe as an “icon, counsellor, and role model” whose death left a deep void in the journalism community.
“Papa was active until death. It’s so painful that we’ve lost an icon — someone we always turned to for advice and direction. Yes, he lived a long life of 90 years, and we even celebrated his birthday in Asaba just a few months ago. But no matter how old a loved one is, losing them still hurts. That’s why we’re here — to share this pain with his family and honour a great man,” he said.
Comr. Oyowe emphasized that although the government had sent official condolences, the NUJ felt it was important to meet the family face-to-face to express their own heart-felt sympathy.
“Papa lived a meaningful life. He was a symbol of active journalism, and we’re grateful for his legacy. We want the family to know that NUJ is fully involved and will support them during the burial arrangements. We also offer a token of support and pray that God will comfort and strengthen the family in this time of loss,” he added.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Pa Onyibe Matthias, expressed gratitude for the NUJ’s visit and comforting words.
“Your presence means a lot. You could have sent someone or just a message, but you came personally — that effort means everything to us. Yes, your Union lost a respected member, but don’t let this loss create a vacuum. God knows best,” he said.
As part of their condolence tour, the NUJ leadership also visited Ute-Okpu in Ika North East LGA to offer sympathy to the family of Dr. Hilary Obioma Ibegbulem, who recently lost his father.
These visits reflect the NUJ’s values of unity, respect, and support, showing that journalism is more than a profession — it’s a family where each life and legacy matters.
