The father of Ukpo Nwamini David, the young man who was taken to the United Kingdom by Senator Ike Ekweremadu for a kidney transplant, has reportedly passed away from heartbreak. This comes after years of no contact with his son, according to Boniface Nwamini Ukpo, David’s brother, who spoke on Monday morning.
According to reports, Boniface confirmed the death of their father and revealed that the family has had no communication with David since the events that unfolded in 2022.
According to him, “yes, my father died yesterday afternoon by 12pm. It’s so sad that since the incident happened in 2022, we have not spoken with my brother, David Nwamini.
“So, my father has been sick over the saga and yesterday he finally died.”
Senator Ike Ekweremadu, his wife, and their doctor were previously sentenced by a London court after being found guilty of trafficking David, a trader from Lagos, to the UK with the intent of illegally harvesting his kidney for their seriously ill daughter.
In 2023, the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) reported that Ekweremadu received a sentence of nine years and eight months in what was the country’s first illegal organ-harvesting prosecution. His wife, Beatrice, was sentenced to four years and six months.
Obinna Obeta, a 51-year-old Nigerian doctor described as the middleman in the case, was sentenced to 10 years in prison. All three were convicted in March 2023 of conspiring to arrange travel for the purpose of harvesting organs.
