Buhari’s man Professor Gambari appointed AU member of Eminent Experts
*panel to review governance, peace, and security frameworks.
FORMER Foreign Affairs Minister and Special Envoy of the United Nation’s Secretary General on Darfur ,Professor Ibrahim Gambari has expressed confidence that the African Union is taking steps in finding home-grown solutions to her web of challenges ranging from security , economy , peace and issues of governance .
The former Chief of staff to late President Muhammadu Buhari gave this assurance while responding to his appointment into the African Union’s High-Level Panel .
His responsibility as member of the panel includes
providing strategic guidance as well as champion African-led solutions.
In a chat , Professor Gambari said he views the appointment as a call to service , stressing that, more than ever , African as a continent must double her efforts in addressing it’s challenges through strategic home-grown approaches that aligns with her desire to tackle emerging threats.
The Nigerian diplomat is also saddled with the responsibility to, alongside other panel members , collaborate with other African practitioners in form of Reference Group and Technical Experts.
These responsibilities are contained in his letter of appointment signed by the commissioner of political Affairs of AU, Ambassador Bankole Adeoye which dated August 20 ,2025, the union said: “On behalf of the chairperson of the African Union I have the honour to notify you of your designation as a member of the High-Level Panel of Eminent Experts to the conduct comprehensive review of the African Union’s Governance, Peace and Security Frameworks.”
The letter further reads: “You are hereby invited to participate in the review process due for 1-5 September in Nairobe, Kenya.
“Arising from the decision of the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government of February 2025, and in the context of the AU institutional reform , this exercise will undertake a strategic review of AU frameworks in the governance, peace and security domains.”
The letter also states that the panel was established under the auspices of the AU champion for institutional reforms and it seeks to enhance “institution coherence , address persistent and emerging threats and reposition the Union to deliver peace dividends inspired by the aspiration of the Agenda 2063.”
According to Professor Gambari the steps taken by the AU are well articulated and commended the AU for appointing knowledgeable Africans with rich , diverse experiences into the panel .
He said to address the African challenges, the protracting issues of governance and institutional coherence must be brought to the front burner and tackled headlong .
Last week Thursday , professor Gambari was felicitated at the faculty of Arts and Social Sciences’ reunion as the funding architect of the international studies programme at the Ahmadu Bello University , Zaria .
Recall he pioneered the International studies programme upon joining the Department of Political Science at the university .
