Edo Govt Approves ₦4.6bn Payment for Sacked Teachers Under Obaseki’s Tenure
The Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has approved the release of ₦4.6 billion as entitlement benefits for disengaged staff of the Colleges of Education in Igueben and Ekiadolor (now Federal College of Education, Technical), Ovia North East Local Government Area.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, said the affected teachers were controversially disengaged by the immediate past administration of Godwin Obaseki without payment of their entitlements.
According to the statement, the approval covers 682 pensioners from the College of Education, Ekiadolor, and 32 pensioners from the College of Education, Igueben. The payment will be made in four tranches of ₦1.164 billion each, with the first tranche already disbursed in line with the provisions of Nigeria’s Pension Act.
Governor Okpebholo also approved the immediate release of ₦292 million as the second tranche of pension entitlements for disengaged staff of the Colleges of Agriculture in Iguoriakhi and Agenebode.
“The payment is scheduled to be effected on or before Wednesday this week,” the statement added.
With this intervention, the Edo State Government has so far disbursed ₦1.4 billion across four institutions, bringing relief to hundreds of families and reaffirming its commitment to prioritizing the welfare of citizens who dedicated their service years to the development of the state.
