The African Democratic Congress (ADC) demands that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu come clean with Nigerians on the real reasons behind the sudden and dramatic shake-up in the leadership of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi the ADC national publicity secretary (NPS) said in a statement today that ” Yes, the President, as Commander-in-Chief, has the power to hire and fire the Service Chiefs. But when such a sweeping change happens overnight — and in the heat of widespread rumours of an attempted coup — Nigerians have every right to ask: What is really going on?”.
Credible sources have hinted that the changes may not be unconnected with the alleged plot to topple the government. Yet, instead of confronting the issue with honesty and clarity, the Tinubu administration has chosen the path of silence, mixed messages, and confusion. In a democracy, that is unacceptable.
According to the ADC spokesman “!Let it be known that most of the Service Chiefs just removed were appointed barely two years ago, and the new Chief of Defence Staff himself was only promoted a year ago. Such abrupt changes at the highest level of the military cannot be business as usual. They point to deep cracks in the system — cracks Nigerians deserve to understand”.
The ADC insists that the TInubu led government owes the people full disclosure pointing out that anything less fuels suspicion, erodes confidence, and invites instability.
As a responsible opposition party, he stated that “the ADC stands for truth, transparency, and the survival of our democracy. What we see today is a government distracted and disorganized — one that appears more obsessed with consolidating power than confronting the real enemies of the Nigerian people: insecurity, poverty, and hopelessness”.
The ADC spokesman lamented that “While terrorists are regrouping and bandits are expanding their reign of terror, the Tinubu administration is busy playing regime politics. The mass removal of Service Chiefs is not about reform — it is about control. And it is dangerous.
“Let no one be deceived: Nigeria’s democracy is on trial. The government’s opacity and panic-driven decisions are feeding rumours, conspiracy theories, and public anxiety. This is not leadership; it is desperation.
“We therefore challenge President Tinubu to speak directly to Nigerians. Tell us the truth. What happened within our armed forces? Why this sudden purge? What is the real story behind the change?
“Nigerians deserve clarity — not secrecy. Accountability — not propaganda. Leadership — not fear”.
