The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has issued a stern warning to night club operators and fun seekers across the country over the emerging trend of organizing and attending “drug parties,” describing the practice as a serious criminal offence under Nigerian law.
The warning follows a recent operation by NDLEA operatives who stormed a drug-themed party held between Saturday night, October 25, and the early hours of Sunday, October 26, 2025, at Proxy Night Club, located at 7 Akin Adesola Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.
During the raid, over 100 attendees were arrested alongside the club’s owner, Mike Eze Nwalie Nwogu, popularly known as Pretty Mike, and his manager, Joachin Millary.
According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, any gathering organized for the consumption, distribution, or abuse of illicit substances constitutes a clear violation of the NDLEA Act and will be treated as a serious narcotic offence.
“In the case of the drug party at Proxy Night Club, organisers went as far as producing and circulating flyers inviting fun seekers to come together to commit a crime — an act that not only incites criminality but also challenges the authority of law enforcement if tolerated,” Babafemi stated.
He described the incident as particularly troubling given Nigeria’s high rate of drug abuse, especially among young people, warning that such parties serve as breeding grounds for addiction and undermine national efforts to promote public health and safety.
Providing details of the operation, Babafemi said NDLEA agents acted on credible intelligence and carried out undercover surveillance on the facility before the raid.
“Our operatives conducted pre-purchases of illicit drugs within the club and monitored activities for about four hours — from 11 p.m. on Saturday to 3 a.m. on Sunday — observing and recording open drug transactions and abuse before moving in to disrupt the brazen display of illegality,” he explained.
Following the operation, all attendees were profiled, counseled, and released within hours, in line with global best practices. However, Pretty Mike and his manager remain in custody after NDLEA operatives recovered 384.886 kilograms of Canadian Loud — a potent strain of cannabis — and other illicit substances from the club’s store.
Babafemi added that the NDLEA will pursue prosecution of those arrested and also initiate legal proceedings for the forfeiture of Proxy Night Club to the Federal Government.
“Owners of properties, hotels, or event centres found to be knowingly hosting such illegal activities risk confiscation and forfeiture of their assets,” he warned.
The Agency also called on parents, community and religious leaders, and the general public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious drug-related gatherings to the NDLEA as part of collective efforts to protect the nation’s wellbeing.
