Former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Daura, has formally announced his intention to contest the 2027 Katsina State governorship election, citing insecurity and poor governance as his main motivations.
Daura made the declaration during an interview with DCL Hausa on Tuesday, where he disclosed that he has concluded consultations with political stakeholders and will soon unveil the political party under which he will run.
“I have been consulting widely on the platform to use for the election, and those consultations have now been concluded. Very soon, I will make the platform known,” he said.
The former intelligence chief was sharply critical of the current Katsina State administration, arguing that its performance has fallen short of expectations, particularly in addressing security challenges.
“Why do people serve for one or two terms? If they get it right, fine. But if the reverse is the case, then there is no point in seeking re-election. It is obvious the current governor is not capable,” Daura stated.
Using a metaphor, he added: “It is like placing a heavy load on someone and adjusting it. If the person complains that it is too heavy, you must remove it to avoid damage. For this administration, we can say thank you for your efforts, but it is time to take a break.”
Daura, a native of Katsina State, noted that although he never initially envisioned himself contesting elective office, the prevailing situation in the state compelled him to step forward.
“I never saw myself coming out to contest. I admire politics, but I have always participated from the background,” he said.
His entry into the race is expected to significantly reshape the political landscape in Katsina ahead of the 2027 general elections.
