Former Governor Ayodele Fayose’s remark that some Southeast leaders operate on a “cash and carry” basis is a weighty statement that deserves reflection, not emotional reaction.
But beyond the controversy of the comment itself, the real issue is leadership accountability.
If a senator who spent eight years as governor and two terms in the Senate can publicly claim that his own community still lacks basic network coverage, then serious questions must be asked. Public office is not ceremonial. It is a responsibility to attract development, push infrastructure, influence federal presence, and improve the lives of constituents.
Leadership is not about titles held or years spent in power — it is about measurable impact.
When communities lack basic amenities such as telecommunications access, roads, healthcare, or power supply after over a decade of representation at both state and federal levels, citizens are justified in demanding answers. Democracy gives people the right to question performance, not personalities.
This should not be framed as an ethnic issue or reduced to emotional generalisations. The Southeast, like every region in Nigeria, has brilliant minds, hardworking citizens, and capable leaders. The real concern is political culture — rewarding loyalty over performance and rhetoric over results.
If elected officials fail to deliver development, the ballot box remains the strongest tool of accountability. Communities must evaluate track records, not party slogans. Political retirement is not punishment; it is a democratic consequence of underperformance.
As 2027 approaches, voters must ask simple but powerful questions:
What tangible development has been attracted to our community?
How effectively has our representative used his influence?
Are we better off than we were before he took office?
Democracy works best when citizens demand results. Accountability should be based on performance, not sentiment.
The conversation should shift from blame to responsibility — and from outrage to action.
