The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his assent to the amended Electoral Act, describing the move as a setback for Nigeria’s democracy.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party alleged that the swift signing of the amendment—despite public objections—raises concerns about transparency and the credibility of future elections, particularly the 2027 general polls.
Key Points from the ADC Statement:
Alleged Democratic Backslide:
The ADC argued that the amendment undermines public confidence in the electoral system and introduces ambiguity in the collation and transmission of results.
Concern Over Speed of Passage:
The party questioned the urgency with which the bill was passed and signed, suggesting it reflects apprehension about facing a transparent electoral process.
Warning of Heightened Tension:
The ADC expressed concern that without firm guarantees of electronic transparency, citizens may feel compelled to physically safeguard votes, potentially increasing tension during elections.
Vow to Mobilise Nigerians:
The party pledged to mobilise citizens through constitutional and lawful means to defend the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy, emphasizing vigilance, unity, and active civic participation.
The ADC concluded by affirming its commitment to protecting the democratic rights of Nigerians and ensuring that the will of the people prevails in future elections.
