…..Asks Turaki Faction To Approach Supreme Court

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) camp loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has told the rival PDP faction led by Taminu Turaki to seek redress at the Supreme Court if it is dissatisfied with a recent court ruling nullifying the party’s November 2025 national convention.

This comes as the Wike-backed leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party announced that it would proceed with plans to hold a new national convention on March 29.

The National Publicity Secretary of the factional National Working Committee led by Abdulrahman Mohammed, Haruna Mohammed, disclosed the development during an interview on Channels Television.

Mohammed stated that the party had already begun a fresh round of congresses in compliance with a Federal High Court judgment delivered by Justice Omotosho.

“In compliance with Justice Omotosho’s judgment, we have carried out our ward congresses and local government congresses. We would hold our state congresses on Saturday.

“I can also tell you and members of the party that our national convention is coming up on 29, 30. We are holding our NEC meeting by Wednesday by the grace of God,” Mohammed said.

He also dismissed concerns raised by the Turaki faction, saying they were free to challenge the decision at the apex court if they believed the ruling was unjust.

“They want to go to the Supreme Court, no problem. It is the same Supreme Court that, three days to the area council election, delivered a landmark judgement regarding the issues of internal affairs of a political party. The Supreme Court said that the issues of internal party affairs are not absolute,” he added.

The comments followed a ruling by the Court of Appeal in Abuja earlier on Monday affirming an earlier judgment of the Federal High Court of Nigeria that invalidated the PDP national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, between November 15 and 16, 2025.

In the judgment, a three-member panel barred the Independent National Electoral Commission from recognising the outcome of the convention, including the emergence of Turaki’s leadership of the party.

Delivering the lead judgment, Justice Uchechukwu Onyemenam held that the party failed to comply with constitutional requirements necessary for a valid national convention.

According to him, the PDP did not serve a valid notice of the convention on the electoral body as required by law.

The judge also rejected the argument that the dispute was purely an internal party matter, ruling instead that the aggrieved members who instituted the case had raised legitimate legal concerns.

While Wike welcomed the ruling, the Turaki faction insisted it would challenge the decision at the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, the electoral calendar released by the Independent National Electoral Commission on February 26, 2026, shows that political parties are expected to conduct their primaries, including dispute resolution processes, between April 23 and May 30, 2026.
