The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the continued detention of its chieftain and former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, describing it as a grave violation of his fundamental human rights.
In a strongly worded statement, the party said El-Rufai has been held in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) for over 30 days without arraignment or formal charges, calling the action illegal and unconstitutional.
ADC alleged that the prolonged detention is aimed at coercing El-Rufai into abandoning his political choices and associations, warning that such tactics undermine democracy and the rule of law.
The party demanded his immediate release or prompt arraignment in a court of competent jurisdiction, stressing that indefinite detention has no place in a democratic society.
ADC further warned that it would petition Amnesty International and other international human rights bodies if the situation persists.
“The continued violation of El-Rufai’s rights is a stain on our democracy and a dangerous descent into lawlessness under the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the statement read.
The party also called on relevant authorities, including the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the ICPC leadership, to uphold the Constitution and respect citizens’ rights.
ADC warned that using state institutions to intimidate political opponents sets a dangerous precedent, urging Nigerians to defend democratic values and resist any erosion of civil liberties.
