Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on Monday formally aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in a move widely seen as a significant boost to opposition politics in the state.
Kwankwaso was received by the National Chairman of the ADC, David Mark, alongside a large number of his supporters at Mark’s residence.
Speaking during the meeting, Mark described the development as more than a routine political defection, noting that it reflects growing public demand for a united and formidable opposition capable of safeguarding democratic values.
According to him, the ADC is emerging as a rallying platform for a broad-based national movement founded on inclusion, integrity, competence, and progress. He added that the coalition aims to provide Nigerians with credible alternatives and restore confidence in democratic governance.
Mark expressed concern over what he termed a gradual erosion of opposition space in the country, warning that any attempt to limit political participation poses a serious threat to democracy.
“The future of Nigeria cannot be built on domination but on participation. Leadership must be earned through trust rather than sustained by control,” he said.
He further noted that Kwankwaso commands a strong grassroots following, particularly in Northern Nigeria through the Kwankwasiyya movement, which could significantly strengthen the ADC’s structure and outreach.
The ADC chairman called on Nigerians across ethnic, religious, and regional lines to join the movement, urging citizens to take an active role in building a more inclusive and accountable system of governance.
He also extended an invitation to other political parties, civil society organisations, and youth groups to form a united coalition, stressing that strengthening democracy requires collective effort and sacrifice.
Mark expressed optimism that the emerging alliance would mark a turning point in Nigeria’s democratic journey, urging citizens to embrace unity, participation, and hope.
In his remarks, Kwankwaso encouraged supporters to register massively as members of the ADC and promote the party’s ideals. He urged them to prepare for future elections by supporting credible leadership through proper voter registration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Meanwhile, a supporter, Alhaji Mubarak Fagge, said he joined Kwankwaso in the ADC to contribute to the party’s success in upcoming elections.
“We have since embarked on house-to-house mobilisation to ensure the political growth of the party in the state,” he said.
