The Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, David Mark, has launched a scathing attack on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accusing it of taking sides in a move he says threatens Nigeria’s democracy.
At a world press conference in Abuja, Mark described INEC’s April 1 decision to withdraw recognition of the ADC leadership as “unlawful” and a “dangerous assault” on democratic governance.
He alleged that the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is working to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections, warning that such actions could push Nigeria towards a one-party state.
Mark maintained that the ADC leadership that emerged from the party’s July 29, 2025 NEC meeting remains the only legitimate authority, dismissing rival claims as baseless.
He faulted INEC’s interpretation of the Court of Appeal ruling, insisting that the commission acted outside the law and has now lost public trust.
In a bold demand, the former Senate President called for the resignation of the INEC chairman and national commissioners, declaring them unfit to conduct credible elections.
Despite the controversy, he affirmed that the ADC would proceed with its scheduled congresses and national convention in April, noting that INEC’s presence is not a legal requirement.
Mark also called on Nigerians and the international community to rise in defence of democracy, warning that the current situation represents a defining moment for the country.
