Former Senate President and National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Mark, on Wednesday moved to calm rising tensions within the party, assuring members and Nigerians that the ongoing crisis poses no threat to its unity.
Mark spoke in Abuja during a church service held in his honour to mark his 78th birthday, at a time when internal disagreements and rival claims have raised concerns about the party’s readiness for the 2027 elections.
“On the issue of the ongoing developments within our great party, the ADC, I wish to assure our members and Nigerians at large that there is no cause for alarm,” he said.
He described the tensions as part of a natural evolutionary process rather than a sign of division.
“Challenges are a natural part of any growing institution. What is important is our collective resolve to overcome them,” Mark added.
The former Senate President stressed that the party remains united and focused on its broader objectives.
“We remain united, determined, and focused on strengthening the party and upholding democratic values,” he said.
Linking the party’s stability to the health of Nigeria’s democracy, Mark reaffirmed ADC’s commitment to national development.
“Let me reiterate that we are fully committed to the survival of democracy and the development of our dear nation, Nigeria,” he said.
He added that the party would continue to work to ensure democratic institutions deliver tangible benefits to citizens.
“We will continue to work tirelessly, guided by discipline, integrity, and patriotism, to ensure that our democratic institutions are preserved and that the dividends of democracy reach all our people.”
Reflecting on his 78th birthday, Mark expressed gratitude while signalling continued engagement in national affairs.
“At 78, my resolve remains unshaken. I am inspired more than ever to contribute my quota to national unity, peace, and progress,” he said.
Meanwhile, prominent political figures including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Rauf Aregbesola, Babachir Lawal, Abba Moro , Tunde Ogbeha sent goodwill messages, praising Mark’s leadership, discipline, and enduring contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey.
