A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday defied efforts to stop its planned event and formally affirmed former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The faction was barred from using its previously scheduled venue at the A-Class Event Centre in the Wuse II District of Abuja. However, members relocated the event to the party’s office in Area 10, Garki District, where the affirmation ceremony was held.
Party chieftains who led members to the event described the affirmation as largely ceremonial, explaining that the main event at which Jonathan was first announced as the consensus candidate had already taken place.
They further disclosed that a date for the formal presentation and handover of the party’s flag to the former president would be announced in due course.
Jonathan was not present at the affirmation ceremony. However, his certificate of return was received on his behalf by Fred Agbedi, a member of the House of Representatives representing Bayelsa State.
The development comes amid growing internal divisions within the PDP ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
