Nigeria today stands at a critical crossroads. From the forests of the North West to the highways of the South East, from rural communities in the Middle Belt to urban centers once considered safe, insecurity has evolved into a complex, multi dimensional crisis. Abductions, kidnapping for ransom, banditry, terrorism, and insurgency have not only threatened lives and property but also eroded public confidence in the state’s capacity to guarantee safety.

A Brief Statistical Chronicle

Over the past decade, Nigeria’s security challenges have intensified both in scale and sophistication. According to multiple security trackers and civil society reports:

* Since the escalation of the Boko Haram insurgency around 2009, tens of thousands of lives have been lost, with over 2 million internally displaced persons at its peak.
* Between 2015 and 2025, kidnapping for ransom emerged as a lucrative criminal enterprise, with thousands of abductions reported annually, particularly along highways and in rural communities.
* Banditry in the North West led to the displacement of entire villages, with states like Zamfara, Katsina, and Kaduna heavily affected.
* The rise of armed non-state actors in the South East added another layer of complexity, with attacks on security formations and government facilities.

The sheer spread of these threats underscores a troubling reality: insecurity in Nigeria is no longer localized, it is national.

Efforts by Successive Administrations

Successive governments have not been idle. Various strategies have been deployed:

* Military Operations: From Operation Lafiya Dole to Operation Hadarin Daji, the military has led sustained offensives against insurgents and bandits.
* Security Sector Funding: Increased defense budgets and procurement of military hardware, including aircraft and surveillance systems.
* Community Policing Initiatives: Attempts to decentralize security and involve local actors.
* Amnesty and Dialogue Efforts: Particularly in the Niger Delta and, in some cases, with bandit groups.
* Legislative Measures: Strengthening anti-terrorism laws and financial tracking to disrupt ransom payments and terror financing.

Despite these efforts, the results have been mixed. While certain territories have been reclaimed and some high profile arrests made, the adaptive nature of these threats has limited long term success.

The Pulse of the Nation

The mood across the country is one of fatigue, anxiety, and growing impatience. Citizens are increasingly resorting to self-help, forming vigilante groups and local defense units. Trust in formal security institutions has been strained, and the psychological toll of insecurity, fear, trauma, and economic uncertainty, is palpable.

For many Nigerians, the question is no longer whether the government is trying, but whether the strategies being deployed are sufficient and effective.

Global Perception

International observers and partners have expressed concern. Travel advisories from countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom frequently warn against non essential travel to several parts of Nigeria. Global security indices consistently rank Nigeria among countries facing significant security challenges.

At the same time, Nigeria’s strategic importance in Africa means the world is invested in its security and stability. Multinational cooperation in intelligence sharing, counter terrorism training, and humanitarian support continues, but expectations for domestic reform remain high.

What New Strategies Should Be Deployed?

The complexity of Nigeria’s security crisis demands a shift from reactive to proactive, intelligence-driven, and people-centered strategies:

1. Technology-Driven Policing: Deployment of drones, can we collaborate with or draw lessons from Ukraine’s experience with low cost Drones, surveillance systems, biometric databases, and real time intelligence platforms. We need to rapidly move in this direction before our enemies do.
2. State and Community Policing: Decentralizing security architecture to empower states and local communities while maintaining national coordination.
3. Border Security Reform: Strengthening control over Nigeria’s porous borders to curb arms trafficking and cross border criminality. Lot of Patriotism is required of the Nigerian Immigration Service.
4. Economic Intervention: Addressing worsening unemployment, Underemployment and growing poverty, which serve as recruitment pools for criminal networks.
5. Judicial Efficiency: Speedy prosecution of suspects to deter crime and restore confidence in the justice system. This is eminently essential and I must say that the Judiciary is stepping up and should sustain the current momentum.
6. Counter-Radicalization Programs: Investing in education, deradicalization, expanding public communication to enhance understanding of the critical role that Operation Safe Corridor is playing, increased deployment of strategic communication to combat extremist ideologies.

Role Bearers and Their Responsibilities

1. Federal Government

* Immediate: Enhance intelligence coordination, equip security forces, and secure highways and vulnerable communities.
* Medium Term: Reform security architecture, implement state policing frameworks, and improve inter agency synergy.
* Long Term: Invest in education, economic inclusion, and institutional reforms that address root causes.

1. State Governments

* Immediate: Strengthen local vigilante structures under proper regulation.
* Medium Term: Develop state level security frameworks and data systems.
* Long Term: Drive grassroots development and social cohesion programs.

1. Security Agencies

* Immediate: Improve response time and operational discipline.
* Medium Term: increase enlistment into security agencies, embrace technology and intelligence led operations.
* Long Term: Institutionalize professionalism, training, and accountability.

1. Traditional and Community Leaders

* Immediate: Support intelligence gathering and community vigilance.
* Medium Term: Promote dialogue and conflict resolution.
* Long Term: Strengthen social values and community resilience.

1. Citizens

* Immediate: Remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies.
* Medium Term: Participate in community security initiatives responsibly.
* Long Term: Uphold national values, reject criminality, and promote unity.

6. Private Sector and Civil Society

* Immediate: Support security interventions through funding and logistics.
* Medium Term: Invest in job creation and youth empowerment.
* Long Term: Partner in national orientation and value reorientation campaigns.

Conclusion

Nigeria’s security challenges are daunting, but not insurmountable. What is required is a coordinated, multi layered approach that combines force with foresight, and enforcement with empathy. It is important to highlight that security is not the responsibility of government alone, it is a collective duty.

The time to act decisively is now. Not with isolated measures, but with a comprehensive national strategy that restores confidence, protects lives, and secures the future of Africa’s most populous nation.l for the benefit of Nigerians, Africans and the entire world.
