A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the party’s senatorial candidate for Nasarawa South in the 2027 general election, Dr. Mike Omeri Agbo, has called on Nigerians to remain steadfast in defending democracy and rejecting all forms of electoral fraud as the nation commemorates the 2026 Democracy Day.
In a Democracy Day message issued on Friday, the former Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) urged citizens to uphold the principles of justice, fairness, accountability, and respect for the people’s mandate.
According to Omeri, June 12 remains a significant date in Nigeria’s democratic history, symbolizing the sacrifices made by democratic heroes who fought for electoral integrity, constitutional governance, and the rule of law.
“Democracy Day serves as a reminder of the courage displayed by Nigerians following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest elections in the country’s history,” he said.
The PDP stalwart congratulated Nigerians on the occasion and called for renewed efforts toward strengthening democratic institutions, promoting national unity, and advancing socio-economic development.
Omeri, who described Nigerians’ contributions to governance, peace, and development as unwavering, appealed for continued prayers and support for the overall growth and progress of the country, particularly Nasarawa State.
The former NOA Director-General also acknowledged the leadership of the PDP at all levels, including the party’s national leaders, National Chairman, National Working Committee, zonal, state, local government, and ward executives, as well as supporters across the country.
While commending ongoing efforts to ensure peaceful, free, fair, and credible elections in 2027, Omeri maintained that the PDP remains a credible and dependable platform committed to delivering good governance and people-oriented leadership.
“As we celebrate democracy, we must renew our commitment to its true spirit. Democracy cannot thrive where electoral manipulation, voter intimidation, and result falsification are tolerated. Every vote must count, and the will of the people must prevail,” he stated.
The senatorial candidate urged his supporters and Nigerians at large to remain law-abiding and vigilant in safeguarding the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on his contributions to society, Omeri disclosed that he had facilitated several employment opportunities and supported numerous humanitarian initiatives in healthcare, education, agriculture, infrastructure development, and financial assistance for vulnerable persons within and beyond Nasarawa State.
He reiterated his commitment to promoting peace, unity, and harmonious coexistence, promising to champion policies aimed at job creation, youth empowerment, agricultural modernization, industrial development, and improved infrastructure.
“My focus remains on advancing the overall interests of my people and Nasarawa State through policies that promote economic growth, strengthen small and medium-scale enterprises, expand support for farmers and traders, and drive reforms capable of improving the living conditions of ordinary citizens,” he said.
Omeri further called on political actors and stakeholders to embrace issue-based campaigns and democratic tolerance as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum. He warned against political violence, divisive politics, and actions capable of undermining the integrity of the democratic process, stressing that politics should be driven by service, ideas, and solutions rather than personal interests.
He also urged Nigerians to prioritize competence, character, integrity, and performance when electing leaders, regardless of political affiliation, ethnicity, or other considerations.
Expressing optimism about the future of the nation’s democracy, Omeri said Nigeria’s democratic system would continue to grow stronger through active citizen participation, accountability, and adherence to democratic values.
He wished Nigerians a peaceful and memorable Democracy Day celebration and reaffirmed his commitment to advancing the interests of the people of Nasarawa State through responsive and development-oriented representation.
