Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, while in the custody of his abductors in Katsina State.
The Katsina State Government confirmed the development on Saturday, describing it as a monumental loss to the nation.
According to the government, the retired army officer died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension while being held captive by bandits despite sustained efforts by security agencies and the state government to secure his freedom.
Major General Abubakar and his wife were abducted about two weeks ago along the Matazu axis of Katsina State while travelling to attend a wedding ceremony.
Their abduction shocked many Nigerians, given the officer’s distinguished military career and contributions to national security. Reports indicated that their driver survived the attack despite sustaining gunshot injuries.
Days after the incident, a video surfaced showing the retired general and his wife in captivity. In the footage, the abductors demanded the release of three detained associates and the return of livestock allegedly seized from them.
Major General Abubakar appealed for peace and dialogue, while his wife called on government authorities and community leaders to facilitate efforts that could secure their release.
Announcing the tragic development, Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu, expressed profound sadness, stating that the retired general’s death was not only a loss to his family and Katsina State but also a significant loss to Nigeria.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda extended his condolences to the bereaved family and described the incident as a dark moment that underscores the urgent need for a united and intensified fight against insecurity and criminality across the country.
The death of Major General Abubakar has once again highlighted the persistent security challenges facing Nigeria, particularly in the North-West, where kidnapping and banditry continue to threaten lives and livelihoods.
His passing in captivity is a sobering reminder that insecurity remains a national emergency requiring decisive and sustained action.
May the soul of Major General Rabe Abubakar rest in peace.
