Commuters in Abuja can now enjoy a major relief on transport costs as the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG) has announced a 40% fare reduction for CNG-powered taxis operating from Area One Motor Park, Garki.
The PiCNG’s Chief Executive Officer, Michael Oluwagbemi, made the announcement at a press briefing on Friday, following the successful conversion of over half of the park’s vehicles to CNG. Represented by North Regional CNG Coordinator, David Idako, he emphasized that the initiative aims to ease the burden caused by the removal of fuel subsidies and promote cleaner, cost-effective energy alternatives.
The fare cuts — implemented in partnership with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) — took effect immediately. Updated fares include:
- Area 1 to Wuse: ₦240 (down from ₦420)
- Area 1 to Gwagwalada: ₦900 (₦1,500)
- Area 1 to Bwari Dutse: ₦900 (₦1,500)
- Area 1 to Kuje: ₦720 (₦1,200)
- Area 1 to Galadimawa: ₦300 (₦500)
- Area 1 to Zuba: ₦900 (₦1,500)
- Area 1 to Mpape: ₦600 (₦1,000)
- Area 1 to Lugbe: ₦420 (₦700)
- Area 1 to Jabi: ₦420 (₦720)
- Area 1 to Nyanya: ₦420 (₦700)
- Area 1 to Kabusa: ₦480 (₦800)
- Area 1 to Apo: ₦300 (₦500)
To ensure compliance, PiCNG and the NURTW have deployed a joint task force, with fare stickers clearly displayed on vehicles. Passengers are encouraged to report non-compliant drivers.
According to NURTW Garki Branch Secretary, Ibrahim Jibril, the switch to CNG is saving drivers up to 75% on fuel costs, making the fare reduction sustainable. He praised the Federal Government’s efforts to alleviate economic pressures on Nigerians.
Meanwhile, PiCNG officials confirmed that Abuja has 10 operational CNG stations, with two more launching soon as part of broader nationwide expansion plans.
