The people of Otukpo, Benue State, took to the streets in a massive protest against the rising wave of killings and kidnappings in the area.
The protesters, chanting “We no go gree!” (We won’t agree!), blocked major roads, demanding immediate government and security intervention.
Daniel Oche, one of the protesters, expressed frustration over the repeated attacks and security operatives’ failure to address the issue.
“This has been happening again and again. We’re not safe in our own homes,” he said.
Oche also revealed a disturbing pattern, alleging that electricity is usually cut off before each attack, saying, “It’s like they don’t want us to see what’s coming”.
The protest follows a series of deadly incidents, including attacks in the Olena area, resulting in at least three deaths, including a woman and her baby, and the kidnapping of four people.
The Ochetohak’idoma Youth Wing Worldwide group condemned the attacks, calling on the government and security agencies to take immediate action.
They highlighted the escalating security challenges in Benue South, particularly in Otukpo, Adoka, Apa, and Agatu, where kidnappers, suspected Fulani herdsmen, and other criminal elements have been wreaking havoc.
