The Olympic spirit came alive today in Edo State as thousands of athletes, sports enthusiasts and residents gathered for the annual Olympic Day Run, flagged off with an inspiring opening speech by Hon Desmond Enabulele, Executive Chairman of the Sports Commission.
In his welcome address, according to a statement by his Media aide, Edoko Wilson Edoko, the Chairman emphasized that the Olympic Day Run was not just an event, but a global celebration of the core Olympic values—excellence, friendship, and respect.
He reminded participants that the day commemorates the birth of the modern Olympic Games and unites over 150 countries in a shared commitment to sport, peace, and perseverance.
“Today, people all over the world are running in the name of these values. And we are proud to join them,” he said, adding that the Olympic Day Run goes beyond winning medals; it promotes healthy living, community spirit, and inclusivity regardless of age, background, or ability.
He applauded the dedication of partners, sponsors, volunteers, and organizers, and commended the runners whose participation demonstrates unwavering commitment to fitness, sportsmanship, and unity.
The Chairman urged everyone to “carry forward the Olympic flame in our hearts—a flame that burns for peace, perseverance, and the belief that through sport, we can build a better and more inclusive world.”
With that, he declared the Olympic Day Run 2025 officially open, encouraging participants to run “not just with your legs, but with your hearts.”
This year’s event, which has attracted widespread attention on social media, reinforces the Sports Commission’s dedication to promoting grassroots sports development, national fitness, and the universal values of the Olympic Movement.
