Drama unfolded at the National Assembly today as suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan arrived on foot in attempt to resume plenary, following a police blockade that barred her vehicle from entering the complex.
The Kogi Central lawmaker, accompanied by activist Aisha Yesufu and a group of supporters, was stopped again at the inner gate by security operatives. Undeterred, she addressed the press, slamming the Senate’s refusal to obey a court order mandating her immediate recall.
“The Senate has not appealed the court ruling ordering my recall. Why am I being denied access to the National Assembly?” she asked pointedly. “We’ve had Senate Presidents like Chuba Okadigbo, David Mark, Bukola Saraki, Ahmed Lawan, but this is the worst Senate in Nigeria’s history.”
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, suspended earlier this year, cited the Federal High Court’s ruling which deemed her suspension unconstitutional and insisted that her constituents deserve representation.
With the Senate set to begin a two-month recess tomorrow, she revealed plans to consult her legal team on next steps, hinting at further legal or political action.
By the time plenary resumes in September, her six-month suspension would have technically expired, raising questions about whether the Senate will formally reinstate her or continue to resist.
