Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has tied his possible defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Appeal Court judgment on the legality of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki’s leadership and the Ibadan convention.
Lawal spoke at a PDP stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House in Gusau, the state capital.
His Special Adviser on Media, Public Enlightenment and Communication, Mustapha Jafaru Kaura, said stakeholders from the 14 local government areas attended the meeting.
He explained that the meeting followed INEC’s guidelines for the 2027 general election, which require parties to conclude congresses at least 300 days before the polls.
“The guidelines indicate that by April or May, all party congresses must be concluded. There are litigations surrounding the PDP at the national level. If we remain without exploring options, we may face uncertainty and others may take the credit,” Kaura said.
The governor’s aide added that the court’s decision on the Ibadan convention would determine the governor’s stay in the party.
“If the judgment is not in our favour, opinions are divided. Some prefer the APC; others the ADC, while some advocate forming a new party,” he said.
Kaura said a committee had been set up to consult across the state before a final decision is taken.
