The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the September 21, 2024, Edo State governorship election, Asue Ighodalo has stated his readiness to approach the Supreme Court to reclaim what he believes is his rightful mandate, if necessary.
Speaking at the Edo PDP stakeholders’ meeting held in Benin City on Thursday, Ighodalo expressed confidence in the legal process, affirming that he and the party are currently pursuing an appeal based on compelling evidence submitted to the court.
Despite the ruling of the State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal which upheld the victory of Senator Monday Okpebholo as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Ighodalo remains undeterred. He emphasized that the case has already progressed to the Court of Appeal.
“People are eager to know how the court case is going. We have filed an appeal. By the grace of God, our legal team is working even harder now. I have full confidence in them. And if necessary, we will take our case to the Supreme Court,” he said.
Ighodalo also recalled how some of his kinsmen urged him to abandon the legal battle, citing regional solidarity since both he and Okpebholo hails from the Edo Central Senatorial District. However, he firmly rejected that notion.
“Some said I should let it go because he is an Esan man like me. I asked, ‘How? If an Esan man takes what belongs to me, I shouldn’t challenge it?’ No!”
He went on to commend PDP supporters and party members for standing firm with him and his running mate, Osarodion Ogie, despite pressure and political risks associated with seeking legal redress.
Providing further insight, Ighodalo alleged that some of his key witnesses were bribed, some with sums between ₦30 million and ₦40 million by individuals linked to the ruling APC to prevent them from testifying in court.
He added that others had their farmlands destroyed and were subjected to threats by unnamed individuals believed to be affiliated with the ruling party, all aimed at intimidating them into silence.
Encouraging his supporters to stay hopeful, Ighodalo said, “Let us be strong. God is just. Do not be afraid. Yes, some things happening are truly frightening, but please, do not fear. Be strong.”
