The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his assent to the amended Electoral Act, describing the move as a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party accused the President of rushing the amendment process despite public objections. The ADC argued that the speed of passage and assent raised concerns about transparency and could undermine confidence in future elections, particularly the 2027 general polls.
According to the party, the amendment introduces ambiguity and grants excessive discretion in the collation and transmission of election results. It maintained that at a time when Nigerians are demanding stronger accountability and full modernization of the electoral system, the changes do not strengthen public trust in the electoral process.
The ADC also questioned why a government that controls a majority of state governments and holds significant influence in the National Assembly would expedite alterations to the electoral framework. It suggested that such urgency may reflect apprehension about facing a fully transparent and competitive electoral process.
While warning about possible tension in future elections, the party affirmed its commitment to constitutional and lawful means in defending democratic principles. It pledged to mobilise citizens toward vigilance, lawful participation, and unity in protecting their constitutional rights.
The ADC concluded by reiterating that the will of the Nigerian people must prevail and that no legislative amendment should undermine the country’s democratic aspirations.
