“I was in Kano prison awaiting trial for 9 years….I was a 100 level Mass Communication student of University of Jos when I was arrested.
“I had never been to Kano before. My elder brother has a phone accessory shop in Guru in Yobe state and I used to do some business there. One day, someone bought a Nokia 2700 phone and sold it to me; few days later, I recieved a call that some people wanted to see me at my brother ‘s shop.
“When I got there, I found out they were policemen. I was taken to Guru police station and from there to Kano. It was while in Kano that I understood that the phone I bought was taken from a robbery scene and the victim was killed.
“The trial began in Norman ‘s land before it was transferred to the Federal High Court in April 2025.
“I won’t wish my enemy to experience Nigerian prison. My initial thought was that whoever happen to be there would never return, but I was wrong. I saw many people leaving and returning few days later. I wonder why they took pleasure in returning to crime.
“People die on daily basis due to hunger. A lot of young innocent inmates are being abused on daily basis. Sodomy is rampant and a lot of inmates have been forced or cajoled into it. Those on death sentence are well fed as such they use their food to lure innocent inmates into Sodomy.
“Many victims of sodomy die on daily basis because most of them could no longer sit and some suffer from infection to the extent that maggots came out of their anuses.
“The government is trying in providing for inmates because as an Imam, I had the privilege of staying outside but unfortunately, not up to 20 percent of the food government supply is utilised, the supply is usually diverted.”
