The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has announced Professor Abiodun Adeniyi, Registrar of Baze University, as the recipient of its 2026 Education Human Rights Award for “Knowledge, Enlightenment and sustainable Future,” in recognition of his sustained contributions to public education and the advancement of citizens’ rights.
In a statement issued by its Executive Director, Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko, HURIWA said the award honours Professor Adeniyi’s “many years of intervention in public education as a researcher, journalist and public intellectual of note,” describing his work as a consistent effort toward combating ignorance and promoting informed citizenship.
According to the organisation, Adeniyi’s humility, public-spiritedness, and unwavering commitment to developing future generations have distinguished him as a leading voice in the advocacy for the right to education and knowledge dissemination in Nigeria.
Onwubiko noted that Professor Adeniyi’s career trajectory reflects a rare blend of scholarship and public engagement, adding that his influence extends beyond academia into journalism and civic enlightenment initiatives that have strengthened democratic values and human rights awareness.
Reacting to the announcement, Professor Adeniyi described the recognition as a “shocking honour,” expressing deep appreciation to HURIWA for the consideration. He immediately dedicated the award to the leadership of Baze University, specifically its Founder and Chancellor, Datti Baba-Ahmed, and the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jamila Shuara, citing their “epistemic support” and institutional encouragement over the years.
He said their leadership has provided an enabling environment for intellectual growth, administrative excellence, and sustained contributions to national development through education.
HURIWA further disclosed that the formal conferment of the award will take place in June 2026, alongside other honourees in various categories already announced by the organisation.
The Education Human Rights Award is one of HURIWA’s flagship recognitions, aimed at celebrating individuals and institutions that have demonstrated exceptional commitment to advancing education as a fundamental human right and a tool for societal transformation.
