Ika South LG Chairman, Ehiwarior, Mourns Publisher, Ashien

Ika South Local Government Chairman, Engr. Jerry Ehiwarior, has expressed shock and deep sorrow over the unfortunate demise of the Publisher of Ika Weekly Newspaper, Mr. Steve Mekiriuwa Ashien, who died on Thursday morning at the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, where he had been receiving treatment.

Engr. Ehiwarior, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Jonathan Onwuka, on Thursday in Agbor, described Mr. Ashien as as an extraordinary Ika patriot who committed his stay on Earth to promoting and advancing the Ika Nation through his many investments, especially in the area of education where he used the defunct Central Bookshops to assist many parents and students, and Ika Weekly Newspaper to inform and educate the people.

He extolled the sterling qualities of the Ewuru- born industrialist, whom, he recalled, was part of the efforts made to establish industries in Agbor in the 1980’s and early 1990’s.

“The passing of Mr. Ashien has created a huge void in Ika land that would be difficult to fill. He was a man who believed in the cause of Ika Nation. Through his tabloid, Ika Weekly, he kept the people informed about happenings, giving voice to the voiceless and holding public office holders accountable to the people.

“He was not just a publisher; he was also a great inspiration to many. He will forever be remembered for his wisdom and his constant search for knowledge.

“As we mourn his departure, let us try to uphold those wonderful ideals he pursued ceaselessly; the ideals of truth, integrity and love for community; so, his legacies will continue to inspire coming generations.

“On behalf of my family, the government and the people of Ika South Local Government Area, I extend my deepest condolences to the family of Ashien and Ewuru community on the passing of their illustrious son, Mr. Steve Ekiri Ashien,” the statement read.

The Chairman, while offering prayer for the peaceful repose of his soul, noted that Mr. Ashien would be deeply missed by all who knew him while he was alive.
