Protesters under the the umbrella of Take It Back Movement has thronged the streets of Abuja, Lagos and Porthacourt to demand for a repeal of the Cybersecurity Act and cancellation of the State of Emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu in Rivers State.
Early on Monday morning, the protesters, dressed in their trademark orange berets, begun to gather in their numbers for their rally from Ikeja Under Bridge in Lagos, chanting slogans and singing solidarity songs.
In Abuja, the protesters gathered around the Eagle Square but demonstrators have been chased with tear gas canisters fired by the police.
The cybercrime act has come under criticisms for it’s provisions which have been allegedly used to target opposition voices, journalists, and the average citizen expressing an opinion online.
Juwon Sanyaolu, national coordinator of TIB, said the core demands of the protesters include the repeal of the cybercrime act and the end of emergency rule in Rivers state, which the group described as a “form of military dictatorship under President Bola Tinubu’s administration”.
In a press release on Sunday, the Nigeria Police had warned against the timing and intents of the protest and urged demonstrators to stay off.
