In an abrupt move, the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has relieved the State Head of Service, Alhaji Abdullahi Musa, of his position, drawing renewed attention to the controversy surrounding the extension of his tenure beyond statutory limit.
The decision, announced Tuesday evening by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, was framed as part of a broader effort to “reposition” the state civil service for efficiency and discipline.
However, insiders note that Musa’s continued stay in office after his official tenure elapsed in 2024 had generated quiet discontent within sections of the civil service.
Though his tenure as a career civil servant had expired, the administration retained him, asking him to continue overseeing the affairs of the service despite murmurs over procedural propriety and internal morale.
Critics questioned the legality and institutional implications of the extension, arguing that it risked undermining established civil service rules.
The government has now moved to end that arrangement.
While the official statement emphasized reform and improved service delivery, it stopped short of addressing the earlier decision to retain Musa after his retirement date, or clarifying whether due process concerns played a role in the latest action.
Governor Yusuf expressed appreciation for the outgoing Head of Service’s contributions, wishing him success in future endeavors.
Yet the abrupt nature of the removal suggests mounting pressure to recalibrate leadership within the state’s bureaucracy.
In an immediate follow-up directive, the governor appointed Hajiya Bilkisu Shehu Maimota, Permanent Secretary, Administration and General Services at the Cabinet Office, as Acting Head of Service pending a substantive appointment.
Musa has been ordered to hand over all official responsibilities by Wednesday, March 11, 2026.
The development signals a potentially consequential turning point in the internal restructuring of Kano State’s civil administration. Whether it marks the beginning of deeper institutional reforms, or merely a leadership reshuffle, remains to be seen.
