Mulade Urges Delta Govt to Embrace Industrialisation Over Rising Unemployment

From Emmanuel Ogoigbe

A prominent Niger Delta activist and traditional chief of Gbaramatu Kingdom, Chief (Dr) Mulade Sheriff, has called on the Delta State Government to urgently adopt large-scale industrialisation as a strategy to tackle rising unemployment and worsening socio-economic
Mulade made the call in a statement issued to journalists in Warri, expressing concern over what he described as the alarming rate of youth unemployment across Delta State, warning that it poses potential security threats if not addressed.

While commending Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for what he termed remarkable achievements in infrastructure development across major urban centres, the activist stressed that physical infrastructure alone would not sufficiently address poverty, hunger and joblessness.

According to him, the state must deliberately redirect attention to policies that promote industrial growth and expand employment opportunities for its growing population.

“The governor has recorded landmark achievements in road construction and other critical infrastructure, and these efforts are commendable. However, the rising level of unemployment is an indication of looming security threats and therefore demands urgent attention. Without industrialisation, the problem of poverty and hunger will continue to worsen,” he said.
Mulade, who is also the Ibe-Sorimowei of the ancient oil-rich Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South-West Local Government Area, urged the state government to revive moribund industries and create an enabling environment capable of attracting both local and foreign investors.

He noted that Delta’s strategic location, vast natural resources and human capital position it to become a major industrial hub if backed by the right policies and strong political will.

“The government should introduce deliberate and people-centred industrial policies, support small and medium-scale enterprises and encourage private sector participation. Sustainable job creation can only be achieved through a robust industrial base,” Mulade added.

The environmental rights advocate maintained that aggressive industrialisation would not only reduce unemployment but also boost internally generated revenue and ensure long-term economic stability in the state.
