Despite mounting opposition and widespread public outcry, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that the newly introduced tax regime is irreversible, insisting that its implementation commences today, January 1, 2026.
In a statement personally signed by him, the President affirmed that the new tax laws—those that came into effect on June 26, 2025, as well as the remaining Acts scheduled for January 1, 2026—will be implemented as planned, without suspension or delay.
Tinubu described the reforms as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to rebuild Nigeria’s fiscal framework, arguing that the measures are aimed at long-term stability rather than immediate revenue extraction.
“These reforms are a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a fair, competitive, and robust fiscal foundation for our country,” the President said.
He maintained that the new laws are not designed to increase the tax burden on Nigerians, but to drive structural reform, harmonise the tax system, protect human dignity, and strengthen the social contract between the government and the people.
The President urged all stakeholders to rally behind the implementation process, noting that the reform agenda has now moved decisively into the delivery phase.
Addressing concerns and criticisms surrounding the laws, Tinubu acknowledged the ongoing public debate but dismissed calls for a halt to the reforms.
“No substantial issue has been established that warrants a disruption of the reform process. Trust is built over time by making the right decisions, not through premature and reactive measures,” he stated.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to due process and the sanctity of enacted laws, while assuring Nigerians that the Presidency would work with the National Assembly to address any legitimate concerns that may arise during implementation.
“The Federal Government will continue to act in the overriding public interest to ensure a tax system that promotes prosperity and shared responsibility,” Tinubu assured.
