The Nigeria Police Force has distributed a total of ₦22.98 billion to the families of 8,311 officers who died in the line of duty between 2018 and 2024. This disbursement is part of the Force’s ongoing welfare initiative to support the next-of-kin of its fallen personnel.
Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, announced the development in a statement issued on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, from Force Headquarters in Abuja. According to the statement, the most recent disbursement took place on May 23, 2025, with ₦2.85 billion distributed to 1,235 families.
The payment covers insurance benefits for the periods 2018–2019, 2021–2022, 2022–2023, and 2023–2024. The IGP emphasized the importance of the initiative, describing it as a significant step toward settling longstanding death benefit claims.
“No amount of money can replace a lost life, but we remain committed to honouring the legacy of our fallen heroes,” Egbetokun said. “The Nigeria Police Force is founded on the values of service, integrity, and sacrifice.”
He further reassured the public that the Force is working toward a future where no bereaved family is left in uncertainty, and where welfare for officers and their families is both responsive and institutionalized.
