NUJ Mourns Frontline Journalist Leon Usigbe
…He Was a Consummate Practitioner
The journalism community has been thrown into mourning following the death of frontline journalist and Abuja Bureau Chief of the Nigerian Tribune, Dr. Leon Usigbe, who passed away over the weekend in an Abuja hospital after a brief illness.
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, confirmed the tragic loss in a statement signed by its Secretary, Comrade Jide Oyekunle. The Council described Dr. Usigbe’s passing as a monumental blow to the journalism profession and the larger society.
According to the NUJ, Dr. Usigbe was initially treated at the State House Clinic before being transferred to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), where he eventually succumbed to the illness.
Born in Uromi, Edo State, Dr. Usigbe was lauded as a consummate professional who upheld the ethics and ideals of journalism throughout a distinguished career. He began his journey in the media with Vanguard Newspapers, covering critical beats in Katsina, Kaduna, and Abuja, particularly excelling in parliamentary reporting.
He also served as Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Aminu Masari. Following his stint in public service, he returned to journalism, later joining the Nigerian Tribune, where he rose through the ranks to become the Abuja Bureau Chief.
Known for his in-depth political reporting, Dr. Usigbe covered the State House and political parties with passion and precision. The NUJ FCT Council described him as “a journalist to be proud of — an embodiment of integrity, professionalism, and commitment.”
“He was a tireless reporter, passionate about truth, fairness, and giving voice to the voiceless. His sudden exit is a painful reminder of the sacrifices journalists make in the line of duty,” the Council stated.
The NUJ noted that his death comes at a critical time when credible journalism is essential to nation-building, peace, and accountability. “His contributions to journalism in Nigeria were immense, and his legacy will continue to inspire younger colleagues,” the statement added.
The Council extended its deepest condolences to his immediate family, the management and staff of the Nigerian Tribune, colleagues, and friends, praying for divine strength and comfort for all affected by the loss.
Dr. Leon Usigbe will be remembered not only for his journalistic excellence but also for his unwavering dedication to truth and justice.
