The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed any likelihood of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, returning to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing political risks associated with such a move.
According to the ADC, rejoining the PDP would be a politically dangerous step for the former Anambra State governor. The party’s position was made known by its spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi, during his appearance on Prime Time on Arise Television, Monday.
Abdullahi, who previously served as a PDP stalwart and Minister of Youth and Sports, refuted claims suggesting the PDP was attempting to lure Obi back into its fold. He emphasized that Obi remains firmly aligned with the opposition coalition led by the ADC in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
He said, “Let me say clearly, Peter Obi is in the coalition.
“Regardless of what anybody is saying. But it is good to see that it has taken the coming on board of the ADC to get the PDP to begin to make some movements.
“But everyone knows the jugular of the PDP is in the hands of the ruling party. Peter Obi, more than anyone else, knows that he cannot take the risk of going to the PDP.”
In the lead-up to the 2027 elections, the ADC’s reaffirmation of Peter Obi’s role in the emerging opposition coalition signals a strategic push to consolidate alternative political forces.
