Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has stirred controversy after posting — and quickly deleting — a message on Instagram suggesting he may be stepping away from international football.
Late Friday night, following Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against Russia in a friendly match in Moscow, Boniface wrote:“Proud to play for my country and a dream for me also, really enjoyed every moment — the good and the bad. Thanks a lot, thank you all. I don hang boot.”
The phrase, a Nigerian Pidgin expression meaning “I’ve retired,” ignited intense speculation among fans and pundits alike. While some viewed the message as a genuine announcement of early retirement from the national team, others dismissed it as another instance of Boniface’s known playful antics on social media.
The post, which attracted over 20,000 reactions before it was removed, left followers divided — especially as Boniface did not issue any follow-up clarification. The timing added to the drama, as the message came shortly after Boniface started for Nigeria but failed to score, continuing a run of underwhelming performances in the Super Eagles jersey. His substitute, Tolu Arokodare, netted the equalizer in the 71st minute.
At just 24, Boniface’s potential exit from the national team would be considered premature by many, especially given his strong form at club level with Bayer Leverkusen. However, even his future there now seems uncertain amid reports of managerial changes, including the appointment of Erik ten Hag as head coach.
As of now, neither Boniface nor the Nigerian Football Federation has issued an official statement regarding his international future.
