President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding democracy and the rule of law in Nigeria.
Speaking on Wednesday during an inter-faith breaking of the fast with leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC)and the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPC) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the President said democracy would continue to thrive under his leadership.
Tinubu stressed that national unity and stability depended on good governance and respect for democratic principles. He also highlighted the importance of strengthening internal democracy within political parties, noting that direct primaries give members a stronger voice in choosing their candidates.
Reflecting on his pro-democracy activism during the military era and his role in the National Democratic Coalition, Tinubu described himself as a “die-hard democrat” committed to a united Nigeria.
“The rule of law must prevail. In a democracy, the majority will have their way while the minority will have their say,” he said, assuring party leaders of his commitment to credible and transparent elections.
APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, commended the President for his leadership and pledged the party’s support for his administration.
Meanwhile, IPAC Chairman Yusuf Dantalle urged the President to reconsider the proposed requirement of the National Identity Number for voter registration, warning that it could disenfranchise many eligible voters.
Dantalle also appealed for the restoration of financial support for political parties by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The IPAC chairman further revealed that a documentary marking 26 years of democracy in Nigeria, titled “Unbroken Democracy,” will soon premiere at the State House with support from Hope Uzodimma, Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum.
