The European Football Football Association (UEFA), is set to sue Gianni Infantino, the President of FIFA, for alleged improper conduct.
The bloc is also pushing for the resignation of Infantino who is seeking a fourth consecutive term of office at the General Meeting of FIFA due in March next year.
The Chicago – based Cable News Network ( CNN), which broke the news of the suit threat on Tuesday morning, said the it followed what it called the improper conduct of Infantino in the lead up and during the recent edition of the global soccer tournament hosted by America, Canada and Mexico.
The CNN quoted an insider as saying that UEFA was “actively considering suing ” Infantino for improper conduct .
The global news source did not indicate when the charge would be filed, but news of the imminent suit comes at a time that Infantino is battling to ward off the effects of growing discontent with his handling of the soccer world cup and its lead up processes.
Details of the imminent suit remain under wrap at press time, but news of it came a day after the Blaze broke news of the withdrawal of support for Infantino by the British Football Association, BFA, which cited his improper handling of the world cup, including his now withdrawn plan to outsource core elements of the championship to private interests, including those linked to the President of the, Donald Trump.
The BFA move followed strongly on the heels of a similar initiative by the Welsh Football Association, WFA, which expressed deep concerns at the conduct of Infantino.
Both the BFA and the WFA are understood to be stoking the plan to pressure Infantino not only to drop his re- election bid, but also to resign well ahead of the March 2027 general elections of FIFA.
Critics, including UEFA, accuse Infantino of undeservedly awarding the hosting rights of the recent edition of the world cup to America, conceding to America, the right to alter the traditional ticketing module of FIFA at the last soccer world cup, thus making it the most expensive in the history of the championship, awarding the controversial FIFA Peace Prize to Trump, and acceding to his plea to reverse the red card issued Nigerian- born American player, Balogun, during the last edition of the tourney.
Infantino is equally accused of unilaterally planning to outsource to private interests, including those linked to the Trump family, core activities related to the championship.
He was yet to respond to the suit threat , at press time.
