A Tribute to Professor Tunde Olusunle: The Brilliance of a Distinguished Alumnus

The investiture of Professor Tunde Olusunle as a Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Ilorin last year was far more than an honour bestowed on an accomplished son of the institution. It was a celebration of intellect, letters, scholarship, public service and a life devoted to the enduring power of knowledge.
For those who have encountered Professor Olusunle through journalism, academia, public communication, authorship or public service, the honour came as no surprise. It was, in many respects, a fitting recognition of a remarkable journey defined by excellence, discipline, creativity, intellectual courage and an uncommon mastery of the written word.
I have a particularly personal reason to celebrate Professor Olusunle.
I first encountered Tunde as a senior colleague in the newsroom of the old Daily Times of Nigeria Plc at Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos, at a time when being a staff member of the newspaper was considered a rare professional privilege.
The Daily Times was then the flagship and, in many respects, the octopus of the Nigerian media industry. It was more than a newspaper organisation. It was an institution. It was a school of journalism, a family and a meeting point for some of the finest minds in Nigerian journalism.
It was in that remarkable environment that I had the privilege of knowing Tunde.
I was subsequently deployed to Benin City as a Senior Reporter, and later worked in Uyo and Enugu before moving to Abuja. Yet, distance and changing professional circumstances could not diminish the bond of friendship, collegiality and brotherhood forged in the newsroom of the Daily Times of old.
That bond remains evergreen.
I followed Tunde’s writings closely, particularly his feature articles, which were not only engaging but also intellectually enriching. His writing challenged one to think differently, to pay closer attention to language and, above all, to appreciate the power of well-crafted journalism.
For me, reading Tunde was also a form of learning.
He was, and remains, a great thinker—energetic, curious, intellectually restless and blessed with an extraordinary command of language.
A Craftsman of the Written Word
Professor Olusunle is, by every measure, a consummate writer.
His prose possesses an elegance that is increasingly rare. It is polished, muscular and remarkably precise. His command of vocabulary never becomes an exercise in linguistic vanity; instead, language is deployed in the service of ideas.
He has that uncommon ability to take complex issues and illuminate them with clarity, rhythm and depth. His sentences are carefully constructed, his arguments thoughtfully developed and his words selected with the precision of a master craftsman.
Tunde does not merely write.
He paints with words.
He interrogates ideas, dissects issues and brings fresh perspectives to familiar subjects. His writings bear the unmistakable fingerprints of a mind that observes deeply, thinks critically and refuses to surrender to intellectual complacency.
He radiates brilliance.

His career is a testament to versatility and intellectual range. As a former Editor of the old Daily Times of Nigeria Plc, he distinguished himself in an era when journalism demanded courage, curiosity, discipline and an uncompromising command of language.
As a renowned publicist, he brought intellectual depth and professional sophistication to the art of communication. As a former Senior Special Assistant to President Olusegun Obasanjo, he brought his considerable communication skills and intellectual capacity to public service at the highest level.
As an author, he has contributed significantly to Nigeria’s literary and intellectual landscape. And as an academic and lecturer in Critical Writing at the University of Abuja, he continues to nurture minds and inspire a new generation of writers, scholars and critical thinkers.
His journey demonstrates a profound truth: intellectual excellence is not an ornament; it is a responsibility.
A Product of an Extraordinary Tradition
Professor Olusunle is also a product of a generation when the Nigerian newsroom was a formidable institution for intellectual development.
The Daily Times of those days was a sacred place for journalism. It was a family. It was a training ground where young reporters learned from experienced editors, where ideas were tested, where language mattered and where professional standards were jealously guarded.
Great minds were made and, in many cases, rebuilt there.
Tunde emerged from that tradition with his intellectual curiosity intact and his commitment to excellence strengthened.
The newsroom gave him a platform; his talent gave him distinction.
That combination has served him remarkably well.
Perhaps one of Professor Olusunle’s most admirable qualities is his ability to remain deeply rooted in the world of ideas while maintaining a profound understanding of society and its complexities.
He writes not merely to display knowledge but to interrogate reality, illuminate society and provoke thoughtful conversation.
That is the mark of a true intellectual.
An Honour Well Deserved
The University of Ilorin, therefore, did more than honour one of its distinguished graduates.
In recognising Professor Tunde Olusunle as a Distinguished Alumnus, the university celebrated what education can produce when talent is matched with discipline, perseverance, character and purpose.
The investiture was also a reminder that the greatness of a university is measured not only by the degrees it awards, but by the quality of men and women it produces and releases into society.
Professor Olusunle is one of those products whose career continues to affirm the enduring value of education.
There is much to celebrate in the Tunde Olusunle story: the journalist who mastered the craft of news and narrative; the editor who understood the discipline of the newsroom; the publicist who appreciated the power of communication; the public servant who served at the highest level; the author whose works reflect a fertile and searching mind; and the teacher who continues to pass the torch of knowledge to another generation.
Above all, there is the gentleman of letters—quietly confident, intellectually formidable, generous in knowledge and consistently brilliant.
His investiture as a Distinguished Alumnus was therefore both an honour and a homecoming.
It was, in a sense, the University of Ilorin saying to one of its own:
We see what you have become. We remember where you began. We celebrate the distance you have travelled.
And indeed, what a journey it has been.
As Professor Olusunle continues to write, teach, publish and contribute to public discourse, he remains a compelling example of the Nigerian intellectual at his finest—rigorous in thought, graceful in expression, committed to excellence and generous in the transmission of knowledge.
For those of us who knew him in the old Daily Times newsroom, his rise has been both gratifying and inspiring.
We saw the brilliance.
We saw the energy.
We saw the intellectual curiosity.
And we saw, even then, the makings of the remarkable scholar, writer, teacher and public intellectual that he has become.
His pen remains his signature.
His scholarship, his legacy.
And his brilliance, unmistakably, his gift to generations.
Congratulations, Professor Tunde Olusunle, distinguished alumnus, scholar, writer, teacher, public intellectual and gentleman of letters.
May the years ahead bring even greater opportunities to deploy your extraordinary intellect, experience and literary gifts in the service of humanity and our nation.
