Effiong Bob to Present New Book on Legislative Burdens in Abuja
Abuja — Former Chairman of the Senate Services Committee, Senator Effiong Bob, will on Saturday, February 7, 2026, present his new book, The Burden of Legislators in Nigeria, at a high-profile ceremony in Abuja.
The event will be chaired by former Senate President, Distinguished Senator David Mark. The Special Guest of Honour is the Senate President, Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio, while another former Senate President, Distinguished Senator Ken Nnamani, will serve as the Legislative Father of the Day.
This was contained in a press statement by the event planning committee signed by Akpandem James .
President of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, is scheduled to present the book, while Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, will lead other state governors attending as Guests of Honour.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to deliver a special goodwill message at the event. The Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, and the First Lady, Distinguished Senator Remi Tinubu, are also expected to be in attendance.
Members of the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly are expected to form the bulk of the audience, alongside distinguished guests drawn from various sectors of public life.
In The Burden of Legislators in Nigeria, Senator Bob contextualises the constitutional roles and responsibilities of the Nigerian legislature, presenting it as a critical pillar of democratic governance. The book outlines the core functions of the legislature—law-making, representation, oversight, and budgetary control—highlighting the institution’s foundational place within Nigeria’s political system.
Beyond technical explanations, the book explores the deeper systemic and personal burdens borne by lawmakers. Drawing on perspectives from both the National Assembly and state legislatures, the author exposes how nomination hurdles, godfatherism, and so-called “pre-election walls” distort democratic processes even before legislators assume office.
The discussion of godfatherism, in particular, reveals how patronage politics undermines merit and weakens legislative independence. The book details how powerful political actors manipulate candidate selection and exert undue influence over elected lawmakers, often subordinating legislative duties to personal or factional interests rather than constitutional obligations and constituent needs.
The book presentation will take place at the Nigerian Air Force Conference Centre, Kado, Abuja.
