The Coroner’s Court sitting at the Yaba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos has adjourned proceedings to April 14, 2026, to commence a formal inquest into the death of 21-month-old Master Nkanu Nnamdi Esege, son of acclaimed Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Dr. Ivara Esege.
Magistrate Atinuke Adetunji fixed the date after a preliminary session to determine whether a full inquest should proceed. The court disclosed that it received an application from the Chief Coroner of Lagos State following a request by the Attorney-General.
Nkanu died on January 7, 2026, after receiving care at Atlantis Hospital and undergoing procedures at Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital. He had initially been admitted to Atlantis Hospital for what was described as a worsening but initially mild illness.
While arrangements were reportedly underway to transfer him to Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States, Atlantis referred the child to Euracare for pre-flight diagnostic procedures, including an MRI, lumbar puncture, and insertion of a central line. The child subsequently passed away following those procedures.
Allegations of Medical Negligence
The parents have alleged medical negligence and professional misconduct in connection with their son’s death. Representing the family, Professor Kemi Pinheiro (SAN) told the court that the child’s death was unnatural and occurred during medical intervention.
He stated that the family intends to present evidence alleging gross medical negligence, possible overdose, wrongful prescription, improper administration of propofol, and wrongful diagnosis. According to him, five independent medical professionals are expected to testify.
Government’s Position
Adebola Rahman appeared on behalf of the Attorney-General of Lagos State. Magistrate Adetunji noted that the Lagos State Government considers itself bereaved and is seeking clarity through the inquest process.
“The Lagos State Government is also bereaved; that is why the Attorney-General has taken this step. It is not just the family of the deceased that is affected,” she said.
The magistrate emphasized that the purpose of the inquest is to determine the cause of death, adding that an autopsy is generally the starting point in such proceedings.
All parties were directed to file their witness statements before the next adjourned date, with the court cautioning them to approach the matter carefully as it seeks to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
