The Senator representing Delta South Senatorial District, Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, on Tuesday paid a conciliatory visit to former Secretary to the Delta State Government, Ovuozourie Samuel Macaulay, in a move widely seen as an effort to mend strained political relations.
The visit, facilitated by Prince Sam Ogri, brought together key stakeholders, including Bishop John Usiwoma Aruakpor and Ven. Agoghene, alongside several supporters of both leaders. Sources at the meeting disclosed that the first effort lasted several hours, with appeals for forgiveness coming from members of the Senator’s delegation as well as the Senator himself.
In his response, Macaulay stated that he harboured no personal grievances, granting forgiveness while acknowledging past tensions.
“I hold nothing against you. I grant you the forgiveness you seek and wish you well, despite the ill treatment and insults directed at me and my family by your supporters,” he said.
He, however, maintained a neutral stance on political endorsements, stressing that his personal decision should not be interpreted as collective support.
“I have only one vote, which I can guarantee you. I cannot speak for others, as they are equally entitled to their opinions and may still feel aggrieved,” Macaulay added.
He further clarified that he was not in a position to determine the Senator’s political future, noting that such decisions rest with divine providence and the leadership of the state under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
According to Hezekiah Ovedhe, Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Macaulay, discussions at the meeting did not extend to political support or Isoko-related projects. He also revealed that over 50 members of the Macaulay political family were present.
Notable figures who spoke during the meeting included Chief Joshua Ovie Oghoole, Hon. Efe Olokor, and Dr. Uzezi Edhere, while Macaulay delivered the concluding remarks.
On the Senator’s side, contributions were made by Senator Onowakpo, Prince Sam Ogri, Bishop John Usiwoma Aruakpor of the Anglican Communion’s Oleh Diocese, and Ven. Agoghene, all of whom urged Macaulay to set aside past grievances in the interest of unity and progress in Isoko Nation.
