Tragedy struck Abatete in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, when a 20-year-old man, Pascal Ogbogu, allegedly hacked his 56-year-old father to death with a machete.
The suspect reportedly fled the scene after the attack but was arrested in the early hours of Wednesday, August 26, following a distress call and a joint effort by police operatives, family members and members of the Abatete Vigilante.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Wednesday, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, said the victim was found lying lifeless in a pool of blood with a deep machete wound to the throat.
He said the prompt arrest of the suspect was facilitated by timely information and the collaborative efforts of community members who assisted the police in tracking him.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, commended the cooperation among the police, local vigilantes, family members and other community stakeholders.
Ama stressed that active community participation and effective intelligence sharing were essential to combating crime and protecting lives and property.
While commiserating with the bereaved family, the Commissioner ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
He assured the public that the investigation would be conducted professionally and that the suspect would be subjected to due process.
Meanwhile, the remains of the deceased have been evacuated and deposited at a morgue for preservation and autopsy.
