The Federal Government has issued a comprehensive flood warning, cautioning residents across 27 states, including Delta, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) about imminent flooding risks between September 27 and October 10, 2026.
This advisory was officially released by the National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre, operating under the Federal Ministry of Environment.
According to the forecast, vulnerable locations are likely to face severe weather triggers, including prolonged rainfall, heightened soil moisture, rapid surface runoff, overflowing drainage networks, and rising water levels.
The Centre has categorized these threatened regions into Critical Risk, High Risk, and Moderate Risk Watchlists to guide safety preparations.
States placed under the Critical Risk category include Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Adamawa, Bauchi, Taraba, Rivers, Edo, Delta, Cross River, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Oyo. Specific vulnerable areas highlighted include towns and districts across Ekiti State such as Ado-Ekiti, Ijero, Ikere, Ekiti Southwest, Ekiti East, Ise/Orun, and Ekiti West, as well as major Lagos communities like Apapa, Badagry, Epe, Eti-Osa, Ikeja, Ikorodu, Ikoyi, Lagos Island, Lekki, Ojo, Orile Agege, Surulere, Agege, Alimosho, and Kosofe.
The Federal Capital Territory—including Abuja Municipal, Abaji, Asokoro, Bwari, Garki, Gwarinpa, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Kubwa, Maitama, Nyanya, and Wuse—along with states like Nasarawa, Plateau, Bauchi, Taraba, Adamawa, and Kebbi, are classified under the High-Risk category.
Meanwhile, a Moderate Risk Watchlist covers communities in Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Yobe, Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, and Jigawa.
Authored by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, the advisory urges citizens in threatened zones to clear local drainage paths, verify evacuation routes, protect vulnerable households, and strictly avoid building or trading near riverbanks and active floodplains.
Residents are also advised to keep children away from moving currents, disconnect home electricity during water surges, and comply promptly with official emergency safety directives.
