Nigeria’s Super Eagles suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday in their Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifying clash in Bissau.
Franculino Dju opened the scoring for the hosts in the 15th minute, curling a fine effort into the far corner beyond Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.
Nigeria struggled to respond, with Ademola Lookman forcing Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Djoco Embadje into a save before the break. Lookman, Taiwo Awoniyi and Akor Adams, however, failed to find a breakthrough as the hosts went into half-time with their lead intact.
Coach Eric Chelle made changes at the interval, introducing Moses Simon and Moses Usor as Nigeria sought to turn the game around.
But Guinea-Bissau remained dangerous on the counter and doubled their advantage in the 66th minute. Mama Baldé cut in from the left before curling a superb effort beyond Nwabali to make it 2-0.
Chelle subsequently brought on Tolu Arokodare, Victor Ilenikhena and Raphael Onyedika as the Super Eagles desperately searched for a way back into the contest.
Nigeria came close when Ilenikhena was presented with an opportunity from close range, but Embadje produced an excellent save to deny the youngster.
Guinea-Bissau remained resolute and completed the rout deep into stoppage time when Álvaro Djaló struck with virtually the last kick of the match to make it 3-0.
The result leaves Nigeria with plenty of work to do in Group L of the AFCON 2027 qualifiers, having opened their campaign with a victory.
With co-hosts Tanzania already guaranteed a place at the 2027 tournament, Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau are battling for the group’s remaining qualification spot.
