The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State has been plunged into fresh turmoil following the immediate resignation of its State Chairman, Venatius Ikem, Esq., who cited an escalating crisis of direction and leadership incoherence within the party.
Ikem formally announced his departure in a resignation letter addressed to the PDP National Secretary at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja, as well as the State Secretary in Calabar.
Opening his statement, Ikem wrote, It is with a heavy heart and a deep sense of responsibility and commitment to the values I hold dear that I hereby resign my position as the State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Cross River State Chapter, with immediate effect.
The outgoing chairman characterized his exit as a difficult but unavoidable decision, explaining that internal friction had severely compromised his capacity to lead effectively and uphold organizational cohesion.
He noted that as the political landscape shifts toward upcoming electoral cycles, navigating divergent internal interests and persistent friction had consistently crippled the party’s strategic unity.
Expressing concern over the state chapter’s trajectory, Ikem stated, “In my considered view, the party is presently grappling with a crisis of direction and leadership coherence.”
He warned, “These challenges have significantly diminished our effectiveness and, if left unaddressed, risk undermining the sacrifices, investments, and aspirations of many loyal members who have worked tirelessly for its success.”
Reflecting on his tenure, Ikem conveyed appreciation for the privilege to lead the state chapter over the last five years, acknowledging key political figures who offered support during his stewardship, including Senator Sandy Onor, Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, and PDP National Leader, Nyesom Wike.
Concluding his farewell address, Ikem extended appreciation to party faithful across Cross River State—particularly his constituents in Obudu—reaffirming his ongoing commitment to the socio-political progress and stability of the state and the nation at large.
