The Catholic Pontiff, Pope Leo XIV, is reportedly set to undergo surgery following the discovery of a lung nodule during a recent medical examination.
The 71-year-old pontiff reportedly disclosed the development at the Vatican during the Angelus, a routine prayer session, indicating that the growth was at an early stage.
According to the report, doctors recommended urgent surgery, a recommendation the Pope said he would comply with.
However, he did not disclose when or where the procedure would take place.
A lung nodule is a small, round or oval-shaped growth in the lung that can be detected through chest X-rays or computed tomography (CT) scans.
Although most lung nodules are benign, meaning they are non-cancerous, some may require further investigation because they can be associated with early-stage lung cancer.
The discovery of a lung nodule does not necessarily indicate cancer, as its nature can only be determined through appropriate medical evaluation.
