Reports emerging from reliable sources within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) indicate that efforts to reach a consensus among the party’s presidential aspirants may have collapsed, as less than 72 hours to the much-anticipated presidential primary election, none of the contenders has stepped down in support of another.
The Liyel Imoke-led Presidential Screening Committee of the ADC had earlier cleared three aspirants to contest in the party’s May 25 presidential primary election. The cleared aspirants are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and former Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) President, Muhammed Hayatudeen.
With consensus efforts appearing unsuccessful, the party is now poised for a make-or-mar direct presidential primary scheduled for Monday.
The winner of the keenly anticipated ADC presidential primary is expected to lead the party into the January 2027 presidential election and mount a formidable challenge against incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
